Albums of Debussy's orchestral works are a dime-a-dozen these days, but ATMA has presented a refreshingly different program here. The program on this CD consists entirely of Debussy's music as orchestrated by other musicians. And a fine roster of arrangers they are: Ravel, Ansermet, Caplet, Büsser, and Stokowski. These arrangements have been recorded often before, but it's good to have them together on one disc.
The Quebec Symphony Orchestra under Yoav Talmi's baton play with great polish and elegance and ATMA's engineering captures all of this perfectly. Here and there I have quibbles. The
Petite Suite drags a bit; the Stokowski arrangement of
Claire de lune is played without the hedonistic abandon the Maestro himself brought to it. But really these are minor complaints and this album is pure delight. Paray and Cluytens have also recorded some of this material and are worth seeking out. But for one stop shopping, you can't beat this album.

Just to let you know...and perhaps this is temporary, though of late Mediafire has been having many, serious problems:
ReplyDeleteThe second file, http://www.mediafire.com/?zmjndkm4ngy, will not complete downloading. I have tried five times; it gets in partway, from only 2% to 58% and then just totally stops downloading. I have sent a Trouble Ticket to Mediafire but they no longer seem to respond to them.
Update as of August 21, 1000am Pacific Time: The download of the second file from Mediafire will not begin at all.
ReplyDeleteI love Debussy and have developed an interest in the orchestral interpretations of his pieces such as Clair de Lune. Appreciate the 320 kbps and the sharing in general. Thank you! It downloaded fine for me, no problems.
ReplyDeleteA very nice CD. Good to have these orchestrations in one place. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt was OK with the second file.
ReplyDeleteBy the way it is an extraordinary disc!
